Taking the decision not to have any more children can be extremely difficult, but such decisions are usually taken for very good reasons.
Sterilisation for both men and women is not always successful. Fallopian tubes and sperm ducts can re-grow naturally following a sterilisation procedure. That is a recognised risk of surgery which a doctor will invariably explain to a patient prior to the procedure.
However, sometimes investigation reveals that the reason the sterilisation has been unsuccessful is because of a failure to:
- clamp or cut the fallopian tubes properly; or
- cut the sperm duct correctly; or
- advise on using contraception for four months following a vasectomy.
